October 17, 1864

We left Atlanta, Georgia, the 3rd of October. We have been marching day and night and are now about ten miles north of Dalton, Georgia, and about thirty miles south of Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The Rebel army has now been marching north. We are ahead of them, but have not done much damage.

We are still holding Atlanta, and the railroad has not been damaged from Atlanta to Riseka.

The railroad is burned from Riseka to Dalton.

All acquaintances are well but hungry, but better times are coming.

Evend has no time to write, he is rasping corn, and baking cakes.

We came here during the night, and tomorrow we will go either forward or back again.
